  • Thinking about Vacation Time

My sister and I are again planning a vacation together later on this year, and this time we’re going to scenic Arkansas.  We haven’t firmed up our itenerary yet, but we have secured a nice Bed and Breakfast in Eureka Springs and will use that as our starting point each day as we head out in a different direction.

Thinking about what we might do and see I got nostalgic and went through some of the pictures from previous vacations together.  There were a lot of grave yard shots and this is one that I’ve never shown you before.

I wonder exactly when the practice of burying the church’s dead on the church grounds was discontinued.

  • I’m not sure where that tradition originated but I’m guessing you don’t see it much any more because of the numbers…..there’d be no room left.

  • Hmmmmm, good question. In the cemetary where we have plots, there is no real estate left so they are burying two deep now. Of course you have to pay 1/2 again for the lot to get the 1st person buried deep enough. I think that most new churchs are built without a thought of a cemetary close by. Maybe there are ordinances about it??

  • …i like cemeteries too and it’s always special if a church is near-by. Lovely pic, Chris! We have one local church whose cemetery is still active. The church looks much like the one in your pic, only painted white.
…perhaps, the practice stopped when commercial cemeteries came into vogue for “special interest” groups and those not affiliated to any church. Just a guess. Hugs, MuSe

  • Alas, I’ve not been getting notification that you’ve blogged… I’m so behind. I am doing more research on Arkansas. It’s going to be fun.
