Fancy Schmancy Peonies
Some friends sent us these beautiful peonies yesterday and I just can’t get over how pretty they are. I grew up with peonies in our back yard, but not exactly like these and not this deep dark red. I’m especially intrigued how the outside petals are nice large smooth petals, whereas the center of the flower is made up of more crinkly petals with edges that look like they’ve been clipped with pinking shears.

These dark pink peonies are the kind we had at our previous house and the kind we had when I was growing up in Illinois. Both varieties are very pretty. . . it’s just that I’d never seen the deep dark red ones with the serrated edges before yesterday. I thought all peonies were like these. Just goes to show you . . . you can learn something new every day.

Mine are in bloom, too. They’re gorgeous.
…think Arkansas a wonderful vacation for you and Alice! Know very little of Arkansas, so your pics will open a door for me.

…Oooo, the peony is one of my favourite flowers!!! Your pics are gorgeous! Just in recent years have I seen the red ones. I have some peonies in the garden but they don’t seem to do well. Think I planted them too deep. They make beautiful bouquets, in fact, I think them the best for bouquets.
…some people won’t bring them in the house because of the ants. For a little effort, they don’t realize the joy they are missing. Hugs,
I’ve seen large red peonies with just a single row of outside peddles with very dark ruffled centers that make them look sort of like poppies. There are lots of varieties, I suppose, but my favorite is still the kind we had in the backyard in Quincy when we were kids.
by the way, I put the script in your head, so you are all set to do slide shows if you like. Let me know when you are ready and I can walk you through it the first time on the phone.
