These trees were very prevalent in Washington DC. I didn't think they were the Cherry Blossoms that Washington DC is so famous for, but I didn't know either that there were pink Magnolias. I thought all Magnolia trees had white blossoms, because that's all I've ever seen in Texas, but Alice assures me that this is a Magnolia tree. Anyway, I thought they were beautiful. We may have been slightly too early for the Cherry Blossoms, but not for the Magnolias.

This looks alot like a tulip tree. We bought one for our yard when we were young and new to gardening and it died... I am really not sure if we killed it or it was planted incorrectly by the nursery or if it was just doomed.
Anyway. I do love this tree.
Common names are saucer magnolia, tulip tree, Japanese magnolia. Magnolia x soulangeanat to be exact. :goodjob: and it is beautiful!
I remember the tulip trees in Quincy, but the Dogwood is what all the hoopla was about.Barbara is in Washington this week, I am anxious to hear whatshe saw. That's what she went for!Your picture is lovely. :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat:Mom

In Indiana, we called them tulip magnolias or tulip trees. Once every eight years or so, there would be a mild enough spring that the trees would bloom like this one. The rest of the springs, late frosts would kill the blossoms. This spring was one of the good ones. I was in Indy for two weeks at the beginning of April and witnessed the opening of the tulip trees. Wonderous.

This Spring I became aware of all the different types of Magnolias, and posted an album of several that I had photograhped as they are everywhere in our town.
