Month: May 2005

  • And then there were THREE.  Looked out the front window this morning before heading for work, and there were now three (or at least 2 and a half) blooms.  I'm sure by tonight that the third one will be fully opened.

We're going this week end to our college 40th reunion . . . I hope this turns out well.  Believe it or not, this will be my very FIRST reunion to go to . . . high school OR college. I sure hope I recognize people and can remember their names.

  • What a Surprise!

As Gomer Pyle was fond of saying, "Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!"  I'm flabergasted!  I had no idea I had any yellow lilies planted out front with all those marvelous pink ones, but just as the last petals were falling off the pink ones, this beautiful yellow one pops open.  Actually I should have realized it was different, because whereas the pink ones each had 28 to 35 blooms per plant, this yellow one has only 5 buds on the one stem.   I should check to see if any of those other lilies that haven't bloomed yet only have 5 or 6 buds per plant.  But what puzzles me, is why didn't I have a yellow one LAST year.  I didn't plant ANY of these lilies.  They were a huge surprise and delight to me the first spring after we bought this house.  This is our third spring here and this is the first time I've seen the yellow lilies.  Oh Joy, Joy JOY!

  • I always love it when I see odd juxtapositions.  Like these two cowboy statues coming out of a small stand of trees . . . right in the middle of downtown Colorado Springs.   We have a spot here in Plano, TX that I always feel the same way about.  It's a cow pasture and it has a very crooked and ruggedly beautiful creek running through it and it's flanked by huge multi-storied buildings, headquarters for their respective corporations.  I'd take a picture of it for you, but there's no place to park the car and even if there was, I'd have to climb over a barbed wire fence and trespass on someone's property to get the picture.  I've tried taking one from the moving car, but traffic just doesn't allow my husband to slow down long enough for me to get a good shot.  I'll have to work on that so I can show you what I mean.

While we were in Colorado Springs I found this adorable jeans skort (combination skirt and shorts) for my grand daughter.  Those colorful stripes are actually zippers that zip up and down, opening or closing five pleats.  The only problem was, they didn't have a coordinating top that went with it, so when I got home I went shopping and bought a plain hot pink T-Shirt that matches the pink zipper and a bunch of neon green and hot pink buttons of various sizes and sewed them on the T-Shirt.  I think it's kind of cute, and it's a cinch that no one else will have a shirt just like hers.

  • Here's a shot of the entrance driveway to the hotel we stayed at last week end.  I just loved all the purple tulips.  There must have been 500 of them.  It's a shame that tulips don't come back year after year like daffodils do.  Imagine having to purchase and plant that many each year.

And here's a shot across the lake that's on the hotel property.  We took several strolls on the half mile path around the lake.  One morning on our walk, Mike and I came across 4 deer munching on the lawn. They didn't run away, they just made sure we kept our distance, but by the time we got back to our room to point them out to our friends, the deer had withdrawn back into the bushes.

  • So, here we are, just the four of us.  Yes . . .the FOUR of us.  That's me and our good friends Linda and Butch.  And, oh yes, that's Mike's thumb over to the left.  I had just said for him to be careful not to get his hand in the picture.  Oh well.

We had a blast!  We did a lot of sight seeing by day and played cards by night. And we ate a lot too.  I think it's great how you can have really good friends that you see maybe only 2 or 3 times a year, but when you get together, it's like yesterday was the last time you saw them.  Good friends are a gift from God.

  • Here's what my driveway looked like when I got home from OKC.  Plenty of blooms and plenty more to come.  Unfortunately, I don't think I can cut any to bring in the house, because each plant has about 20 buds/blooms per stem.  If I cut a bouqeut for the house then I'm also insuring that the other 15 buds won't ever bloom, so I guess I'll just be content to look at them out my kitchen window.

We have some very good friends coming tonight that we've known for 39 1/2 years.  How can I be so certain how long we've known them?  They were married 3 months after we were and moved to Edmond, Oklahoma when they got married.  We met them at our church in Oklahoma City that same year and we've been good friends ever since. . . and that's a long time.  Now they live in Ardmore, Oklahoma and we see them 2 or 3 times a year.  Last time we got together (January) we decided that since it was both of our 40th anniversaries coming up that we ought to celebrate them together. And since we got married in April and they got married in June, we're splitting the difference and celebrating together in May.  We're all going to Colorado Springs for a long week end. We'll laugh a lot, eat a lot, do some sight seeing in the day time and play cards until very late at night. Sounds like a perfect time.

Here are some more shots from Will Rogers Park in Oklahoma City.  I'm posting these to show you that the park was more than JUST roses and iris.  There were lots of other blooming things to look at.  And it was just nice for mom to get out in the fresh air.

And here are some of my favorite shots from Alice's garden.  It's amazing to me how much she has accomplished in just under one year with her garden.  She has put in untold number of hours digging, planting, deadheading . . . and it shows.  The top left iris is called "Rare Treat" and Alice is going to send me a baby sometime.  I don't know the name of the orange and yellow daisy like flower . . . I just know I liked it. Then on the bottom row is one of Alice's favorite flowers, the Shasta Daisy.  I really liked how they danced in the Oklahoma wind.  I took a very short movie of them with my digital camera, but unfortunately I don't know how, or even if it's possible, to post a movie in a blog.

And finally, that last picture is of Gaura.  It's wonderful.  It has long spindly spider like stems that really move with the wind.  I've got to figure out a place in my yard that would be suitable for Gaura.

Here's just a sampling of the many many roses we saw at the Rose Gardens in Will Rogers Park in Oklahoma City this past week end.  Alice, mom and I had an almost perfect day for strolling through the gardens.  It was sort of cloudy so the sun was not beating down on us, but yet it didn't rain on us either. . . well, four drops between the three of us, but that hardly counts.  Right?  Alice was hoping that her garden would get a good rain after we left the park, but it wasn't to be . . . not that night anyway.
