Month: April 2006

  • We make progress each day.  Benny did indeed come by today and fix all 17 of the items he said he would on the inspection list.  He actually came twice... the first time around 9:30 or 10 AM but went home when the electricity went out around 11:30.  He told me to call him whenever the lights came back on, which I did.  He finished up around 4:45 this afternoon, at which time we went over the list, item by item to make sure everything was done. Thank you, Benny!

I also had two people come by to pick up the furniture that they bought from me.  Now I have the empty corner guest bedroom to stack boxes in.  And besides that, I got another 15 boxes packed.

  • Moving is NOT for the faint of heart !!  I will be glad when this whole move is accomplished, and to tell you the truth, I don't know whether or not I would have attempted it, had I known in advance just how difficult and tiring this whole process would become.  But we'll make it somehow . . . "one day at a time", as Michael used to say.

Tomorrow is going to be a very busy day here.  I have Maryann coming to pick up the bedroom suit she bought, and then Steve and Carroll are coming to pick up the library table and recliner they bought plus the books that didn't sell in the garage sale.  And all day long, Benny will be here fixing the 17 things we said we'd fix on the inspection list.  And during all this, my house is an absolute mess.  It's giving me a headache being in the middle of this messy house, but it just can't be helped while I'm packing.  And all this packing makes me wish I'd gotten rid of even more stuff in the garage sale.  Too Late!!

  • Before Alice went home after helping me with my garage sale, she dug up some of the irises she had given me last July for my birthday.  She's going to stick them in her garden until they can be transplanted yet again to my new garden after my house is built.  When she dug up the white Mesmerizer rhizomes there was a bud on one of them, so we cut it off and put it in the only thing I could find as a bud vase.  I've already packed all my bud vases you see.

The latest on the sale of the house:  After I sent back the response that I would fix 17 of the 21 items on the inspection list (the other 4 are not detramental to the living conditions of the house) they sent back another reply that they still want 3 of the other 4 items fixed. I can't repeat what my contractor said about their request, but suffice it to say we were not amused.  Last night I told my realtor to tell them that I'd already been more than generous in offering to fix 17 out of 21 items on their list, and that I simply would not do more.  Then my brother in law said that it would be a shame for the whole deal to go south because of 3 minor items . . . . so this morning I called and told my realtor to tell the buzzards that I'd give them a check for $300 to take care of the final three items.  Now we wait again.  If they're going to back out it will be today.  It's their last day to back out without forfeiting their $5K earnest money.

  • The buyers of my current house had their inspection done last Monday, but they waited until today . . . SUNDAY . . . to give me a copy of the inspection.  I have to give them my reply by tomorrow.  That in itself steams me.  One can only speculate why they waited until two days before their "back out" date to give me the list of things they THINK should be repaired.  Well, I have an ace up my sleeve.  His name is Benny, and he's a good friend and a contractor, and he and his wife came over this afternoon and looked at the list and he assessed the situation for himself.  He said they were probably hoping that I'd just deduct another $5 thousand off the price of the house to make the problem go away and then they'd pocket the money and never make the repairs.  He said he can make 17 of the 21 repairs they listed (no one EVER does ALL of them) for under a thousand dollars, and he'll do them before the closing date.  I'd like to be a fly on the wall and see their faces when they find out that I was able to contract for that many repairs in such a short time.

By the way, the garage sale was a very successful one.  I got rid of a LOT of excess stuff and made some money taboot. By the end of the 2nd day, not much more than the junk was left.  A little, but not much.  We did have one mishap though.  A woman was looking at a candle and turned to ask the price of it, but dropped it on the leaded glass top coffee table I was selling, shattering one of the six 12"x12" insets, which unfortunately makes the whole coffee table pretty much worthless. But . . . such is life.

  • This has got to be a quickie!!!  Alice came down to Dallas to help me finish getting ready for my garage sale.  WE ARE BUSHED.  We have accomplished a lot today, but are really ready for that hot bath and the bed.  I'd say we're about 80% done with pricing and we can finish that up tomorrow.  The real bottle neck is going to be the actual days of the garage sale . . . getting the stuff OUT of the garage and onto tables.  And what I wouldn't give to have a couple more card tables to use.

  • Busy busy day today. I made a bunch of phone calls trying to get all my ducks in a row to prepare for my move.  I also packed more boxes and priced a lot of stuff for the garage sale I'm having this coming week end.  Then this evening, one of my former bosses and another guy we used to work with came over with a UHaul truck and brought back all the stuff I had stored in the nearly full 10x10 storage unit I had rented.  It's a good thing I'm not showing the house any more, because it looks a mess.  Boxes stacked everywhere. 30 days and counting.

  • I'd show you a picture of me doing cart wheels, but can't for two reasons.  First, I have no such picture and secondly, I don't believe I could still DO cartwheels.  But suffice it to say that I am a happy camper!!!  I finally sold the house and can get on with packing the rest of the house, without worrying about how messy it's making the house look.

I will be chronicling the whole process of building my new house on my MissChris Xanga site.  The URL is: http://www.xanga.com/MissChris

  • This is the other Iris that Alice gave me for my birthday last year.  I can't remember the name of it (alas, I'm doing good to remember that it's an Iris) but it sure is pretty.  See how frilly the edges are.  Also, can you see the bee inside, busy collecting pollen?

Going into the hospital for a minor day-surgery procedure in less than an hour, and should be home again by 1:00 pm.  My friend Darlene is driving me there and back, because after the procedure I will be in no shape to drive a vehicle.  Pretty much in la la land, incoherent and barely able to walk.  So if that much anticipated and illusive offer on the house should finally come today, I'll just have to wait until the cob webs are out of my head to respond.

  • Well, it took me three tries, but I finally got the picture to load.  I came back from my four day trip to Houston/San Antonio to find Irises blooming in my back yard.  These are Irises that Alice gave me last year for my birthday.  They are georgous.  I'm so glad you can finally see the picture.

The nibble on the house has not turned into an offer . . . yet.  This could give me gray hair. . . or I guess I should say it could give me MORE gray hair.

  • I've got a nibble on the house, but just a nibble.  No offer yet, but my realtor called or came be 3 times today to get different information for our nibbler.  Evidently the wife of the nibbler is traveling and I'm not sure when she gets back in town.  As soon as she does she'll look at the house and maybe then (just maybe) we'll get an offer.  Keep your fingers crossed.
