The birds that built a nest in the light fixture of my son's house last year did it again THIS year. You really have to nip it in the bud, or else THIS is what you end up with. . . . an unsightly nest and bird droppings on the front porch taboot. I think I'd remove the light fixture before I'd put up with that again. . . or at least change the fixture so that the birds couldn't possibly build a nest in it.

There is a large bird bath not 50 feet from my apartment front door, but the poor birds couldn't use it because there was a hole in the middle of the bowl. Evidently some sort of shaft used to go down into the stand through the hole in the bowl, but who knows where it is or how long it's been missing. I tried plugging the hole with sticks, but that didn't keep the water from disappearing down the hole. So, I got the bright idea of hot-gluing one of the small river rocks I brought from my own garden over the hole. It took three applications of the hot glue gun to do the job, mostly because by the time I ran the 50 feet from my front door with the dripping hot glue gun it was only a very warm glue gun. But persistance pays, and I gave it a half hour to cool and filled the bowl with water and it's still there. Now, I just hope the birds notice that there's water for them.
And here is a close up of one of my Zinnia flowers.

I wish I had taken a picture of my computer screen, because I actually beat Alice at Scrabble tonight. You know how some days you can't get anything right, and other days (like tonight) you just can't seem to go wrong. I was getting really good letters and the words just revealed themselves to me. I had a really good score for me (over 300). I wish I could play that well all the time.

Alice and I decided I needed a bit a color in that small flower bed in front of my apartment. The bed is under the eve of the apartment so it doesn't get any rain water to speak of, and the neighbors said that they haven't seen anybody do anything to that little patch of earth for the 4 years they've lived there. So, Friday evening I worked and worked to get rid of the lava rock that was covering the ground and also to turn the soil a bit. At first I thought that there must be concrete just below the dirt surface, because I couldn't get a shovel to go down into the ground. But after much work I realized that the dirt was so dry and hard that it just FELT like concrete. Saturday morning Alice came over early and helped me finish turning the soil and adding potting soil to it. We went to TLC nursery and got a few plants and planted them. The back row is Cosmos, the middle row is "blackie sweet potato" and the front row is Zinnias. They are not looking bad at all for having just been planted. I'll be watering it every day for the next week and then 2 or 3 times a week after that.

Permit me, if you will, to give you a quick tour of my tiny apartment (400 sq.ft.) that I'll be living in for the next 5 or 6 months while my house is being built.
And this chair and end tables comprises my living room.
Obviously, this is my little kitchen.
And this small drop leaf end table is serving as my dining room table and microwave stand.
I have a small bathroom as well, but that's not very inspiring. I really didn't think anyone would be interested in seeing it.
So this is where I'll be living for the next few months and I'm quite pleased with it. It's not nearly as crowded as I thought it would be . . . and as Martha would say, "That's a GOOD thing".

Well, they finally started the work on building my house. Not much to report, except that they have now graded the lot in preparation for pouring the foundation. You can check it out at: http://www.xanga.com/MissChris .

Oops, SOMEWHERE in all that jigsaw puzzle of furniture and boxes below are all of my dress shoes. For now I have only the tennis shoes I was wearing when I drove to OKC on Friday. I didn't realize my shoes were "missing" until Sunday morning when I was getting dressed for church. Before the move I had gone through all my shoes to weed out the ones that were slightly uncomfortable or that I hadn't worn in a long time and ended up giving away a whole box of shoes . . . but I still had over 20 pairs, so I marked 6 pairs to go to my apartment and all the others to go into storage, but alas, they ALL went to storage. So now I'll have to get a pair of Sunday high heels and a pair of black flats to wear the next 6 months and that may not be such an easy thing to do because I wear a 10AAA. In Dallas I could only get shoes at Nordstroms and there is no Nordstroms in OKC. I sure hope I don't have to drive to Dallas just to get 2 pair of shoes.

Today was MOVE IN DAY at my new apartment and also STORAGE DAY for the rest of my stuff. I'll show you pictures of my apartment later, but thought I'd show you pictures from the storage unit part of today. This is my van outside the U-StoreAll unit that will be home for the next 5 to 6 moths for the stuff that won't fit into my tiny apartment. The four man crew was just the nicest bunch of guys.
They really worked hard to pack the stuff in the storage unit very well so that I wouldn't have to rent an additional unit.
And here they are sticking in the last item. See, it's just about flush with the door and just barely fits under the door. This storage unit is FULL. Each piece is fitted in like one huge jig saw puzzle. I don't envy the guys that will eventually have to unload it when my house is finished. That will be "the REST of the story".
See the short guy? You wouldn't believe how strong he is. When he was carrying a large book case, he looked like those pictures of ants when they're carrying pieces of leaves 10 times their own size and weight. These guys were really amazing.
