  • Alice and I decided I needed a bit a color in that small flower bed in front of my apartment.  The bed is under the eve of the apartment so it doesn't get any rain water to speak of, and the neighbors said that they haven't seen anybody do anything to that little patch of earth for the 4 years they've lived there.  So, Friday evening I worked and worked to get rid of the lava rock that was covering the ground and also to turn the soil a bit.  At first I thought that there must be concrete just below the dirt surface, because I couldn't get a shovel to go down into the ground.  But after much work I realized that the dirt was so dry and hard that it just FELT like concrete.  Saturday morning Alice came over early and helped me finish turning the soil and adding potting soil to it. We went to TLC nursery and got a few plants and planted them.  The back row is Cosmos, the middle row is "blackie sweet potato" and the front row is Zinnias.  They are not looking bad at all for having just been planted.  I'll be watering it every day for the next week and then 2 or 3 times a week after that.
