The birds that built a nest in the light fixture of my son's house last year did it again THIS year. You really have to nip it in the bud, or else THIS is what you end up with. . . . an unsightly nest and bird droppings on the front porch taboot. I think I'd remove the light fixture before I'd put up with that again. . . or at least change the fixture so that the birds couldn't possibly build a nest in it.

Those seem like resourceful birds--I think they'd be able to build a mudnest anywhere! But you are right, they will keep coming back. I finally won such a contest of wills with a pair of birds who had already built on the wrong spot two years in a row. It took much diligence. I placed rocks in their way, hung CD's, but windchimes seem to be the deal breaker for them. I finally found where they relocated just last week--right above my neighbor's front door! What a mess.
We cover all the furniture on the back porch until the returning birds have hatched and gone. I stopped fighting them because I enjoy them so much...now we just coexist.
That's a barn swallow nest, and doubtless, baby barn swallows. They are beautiful birds and eat bugs like martins do. Since there are fewer barns for swallows to use, they have discovered front porches and many people are having the same experience with them. We had a pair try to get started building a nest on our porch, but they must have given up. I still see them around, but not on the front porch. Unsightly, though the nest is, you know me -- I'd put up with it for the experience.
