I wasn't really keen on having rose bushes in my landscaping plan, but this is one that the landscape guy who my builder provided recommended. You see, I've never been really GOOD with roses and I didn't want to have to pamper any thing planted in my yard. I'm sure glad he talked me into this Home Run rose bush. I have this one in the front and since I liked it so much (it blooms constantly) I also put in 3 in the back yard as well . . . 2 Home Run bushes and one Double Knock Out rose bush. In fact they are so prolific that I'm now thinking of creating a long skinny island of rose bushes on the strip of land out front that separates my neighbor's driveway from my driveway.
And see how all the pink tulips are looking out front of the house. Beyond the tulips you can see my driveway, then that narrow strip of grass and then my neighbor's driveway. That narrow strip is where I'm thinking of putting the rose bushes. Your thoughts?

My thoughts are that you should come live with me for several weeks and do something with the mess I have here. I raked out and dealt with some mums again today in another place in the yard and think they are a lost cause. I have a feeling that I'm going to have to start from scratch again. I had hundreds of dollars worth of mums, day lilies and hosta and think most are lost. The butterfly bushes don't look good and can't even find 3 of them. Between drought, heavy snow and ice and then the April freeze I don't think much survived.
Chris, I tried roses when we moved here, and I finally lost. But I did not have sense enough to get ones that do well in Okla. weather. I had such beautiful tea roses in Ill. --- you know I KNEW it all. I think you're doing fine. I love to see pictures of your yard.:sunny::wink::love::love:Mom
Those new Hot Shot roses are so robust they can stand any abuse (I know). I would wait with a garden between the driveways.
Maybe make it a project for next year... sometimes when I am not sure about something... I know it is best to wait.
So far, your gardens look outstanding
I have pink tulips in the front and I absolutely love them... I have various colors in the back yard. The pink... and I have some blue and yellows going on in the front that tend to keep that ugly orangey brick (first resale house we have purchased but it was a good investment) "at bay"... brings out some imaginary blues
My thoughts: Think about it this season until you get a feel for how much work your flower beds are going to be before you add to it. Time enough in the fall to create the new bed if you decide to.
I would be thinking not only of extra work required but hoping no one next door ever went off the driveway.
Truthfully would it be overkill?
If I were your neighbor I would probably LOVE it.
My rose bush doesn't have a bloom on it yet. The frost killed all my little buds. I think it's trying to grow somemore. :sunny: Your gardens look beautiful. I bet everyone that drives or walks by is guessing that your yard and Alice's are "related"! :giggle:
If you plan to put the Knockout roses on a property line, remember that they can get quite large, and will extend over into the neighbor's mowing area if you don't keep them cut back. Also, I've found they have very large thorns that reach out and grab you when you're least expecting it. I do love the Knockout roses, though.
