Old Market Center in Chipping Campden, England Photo and enhancement by Chris Duffy
Oh my, what a frustrating evening! I’m glad no one was there to hear me because I’m ashamed to say that a few choice words came out of my mouth. . . come to think of it, it would have been better if someone WAS there to hear me, because then I probably would have stiffled myself better.
First of all, it was a challenge just to get the old computer taken out of the computer cabinet. All that “spagetti” had intertwined itself and you couldn’t tell what was attached to what. And you have to practically stand on your head to get down where the CPU is housed. And of course there is no light down there and all the flashlights in the house were dead. But finally I prevailed and got it out and all the cords to the speakers untangled and removed.
Got most all of the cables hooked up to the new CPU . . . monitor, keyboard, mouse, cable modem, etc. However, when I got to the speakers I didn’t know what to do. There was not a slot to plug in the external speakers AND the speakers built into the monitor. I finally opted to use the external speakers, because I figured they would provide better sound quality. But then when I turned on the computer, wonderful sound came out of the speakers, but no picture on the monitor. It took me over a half hour to figure out how it was that the monitor was not getting any electricity. Then, like it was demon possessed, as soon as I got a picture on the monitor there was NO SOUND. NONE AT ALL!! I fiddled and fidgeted with it for the next hour, but still no sound. When I started crying I figured it was time to quit for the evening. But . . . since it was still in it’s “Let’s set up your computer mode” I couldn’t get to the shut down window. I tried Control-Alt-Delete several times, which produced no shut down window. I tried the Windows key on the keyboard, but no luck their either. So back to the only method that’s been working for me on the old machine. . . I pulled the plug. Sorry XP, but it was either that or leave you on all night. I’m thinking that having my Systems Engineer friend come over and bail me out is not such a bad thing . . . just hope HE thinks it’s not such a bad thing too. . . otherwise it’s Geeks On Call again for $200. And after paying for the computer, I really don’t have $200 to spend on a Geek.

Sorry for your frustration, Christine. :( By the way, it doesn’t hurt anything to leave your computer on all night.

Ahhhh, but my husband hits the ceiling if I leave my computer on for even a half hour if I’m not actually IN the room USING the computer. He thinks it will run up our electric bill to an astronomical amount.
I don’t know what I would do without a computerized husband. I can do a lot of things on here but what you are attempting scares me to death. I’ll be watching and trying to learn something from you and your experience. :)
:( Oh, Chris, I’m so sorry you had such a hard time setting up the new computer. Setting up my computer at the new house went so smoothly that I wish I could have taken some of the frustration from you. Not one thing has gone wrong here — everything worked the first time I tried it. Of course, you know me, I marked EVERY connection before I unplugged them so I would remember how it is supposed to go. But then, that strategy wouldn’t help with a brand new computer. I hope your Systems Engineer friend can set it up right for you — and soon!!! love you   :heartbeat:
Did you see the Grevel House? Its six hundred years old and still a really desirable mansion. Chipping means market
What a great shot of the Old Market Center in Chipping, England! :goodjob:
I’m so sorry that you’re having problems setting up you new computer. I had a bad pixel in my new monitor, so we took it back last night. They didn’t have any more 17″ ones, so my husband said, “What about a 19″. I didn’t want to go to the smaller 15″, so I said O.K. We ended up paying an extra $200 for the larger monitor. It also has speakers that plug into the monitor. My husband set it up and everything is working fine. It is so nice to have a husband that could set it up for me. I hope your friend can help you get yours set up.
